Museum of Warsaw

Medallions, stone reliefs, clocks, photographs of the bombings, striped pajamas... Explore the intricate history of Warsaw showcased in the city museum's exhibition, located in the heart of the Old Town Market Square.

In the heart of Market Square, you'll find a building that stands out above all others: the Warsaw City Museum. Located in the historic heart of the Polish capital, this museum houses a comprehensive exhibition that traces the history of Warsaw from its origins as a small town to its total destruction during World War II.

The collection

The extensive Warsaw Museum collection is made up of about 300,000 items relevant to the city meticulously showcased across roughly twenty thematic rooms. The lower floors delve into intriguing aspects of the capital's history, exploring pre- and post-war Jewish demographics, the city's evolving trades, and the various representations of the Warsaw Mermaid.

Ascending to the second floor, visitors encounter artifacts unearthed during archaeological excavations, including decorative pieces, crockery, and stone reliefs. Noteworthy is the museum's precious assortment of silver and bronze objects intricately linked to Warsaw.

A highlight of exceptional value within the museum is the original sculpture of the beloved Warsaw Mermaid. The Warsaw Museum also dedicates a space to the artistic depictions of the mermaid throughout Warsaw's history.

Among the myriad artifacts, historical photographs of Warsaw emerge as poignant witnesses, capturing the wartime horrors and the resilience of the city's inhabitants.
